Camping season is right around the corner, and that means that RV shows are popping up all over the place. If you’re thinking about purchasing a new camper, an RV show is a great place to start. RV shows are a blast, but there is also a lot to consider before you head out. Make the most of your RV show experience – utilize the following tips to ensure you have a productive and fun day.

WHY SHOULD YOU GO?

If you’re looking for an RV or camper, RV shows will give you a unique opportunity to explore. Going to a show allows you to comparison shop between many makes and models without having to visit multiple locations. Because of this, you can get a feel for what is available, floor plans, features, and pricing. These shows also give you the chance to connect with local dealers. Many times, dealers offer drawings for generous prizes like camping accessories, generators, and gift baskets. In addition to dealers, RV shows usually have additional booth space for camping-related vendors. You’ll be able to check out accessories, fun camping gadgets, and get local camping information in the same place.

PREPARING FOR THE SHOW

To get the most out of your day at the show, come prepared! It’s a good idea to sit down and make a list of your goals before you head out. Things to consider are:

  • Do you want a motorized coach or a towable?
  • What is the largest size coach or trailer you feel comfortable driving?
  • How many people does your trailer need to sleep?
  • Do you have small children or pets to consider?
  • What are the features you can’t live without?
  • What features would be nice, but aren’t a deal-breaker?
  • What is your budget?

It’s also important that you have your tow vehicle information readily available if you’re considering a towable trailer. Respecting the towing capacity of your vehicle will help prevent vehicle damage and dangerous accidents. Use your owner’s manual to find the maximum towing capacity for your tow vehicle and bring that information with you to the show. Keep in mind, you need to leave a generous allowance for the weight of passengers, cargo, and liquids.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes – you will be walking quite a bit. It’s a good idea to also bring a tape measure so you can measure interior spaces easily!

AT THE SHOW

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with floor plans and features when there are so many options. Bring a notepad and pen so you can take notes about the units you love. Make a list of the pros and cons of each unit you’re considering and take pictures of the interiors. It’s also a good idea to take a picture of the make and model so you can recall it later. You can usually find this information on the outside of the unit next to the entry door.

Make sure you test out any units you’re considering. Lay down in the bed, recline in the theater seating, and make sure the shower is tall enough for everyone. Sit down at the table to get a feel for what mealtime will be like. Open the cabinets and make sure there is enough storage space. Measure and write down any important dimensions! It’s a good idea to have your sales consultant walk you through how to use different features like setting up the beds. Be sure you ask any questions you have and get contact information for who you spoke with. If you have kids, bring them along and let them test out their space. Most shows are very family-friendly and include activities for little ones to enjoy! Once you’ve walked through it completely, refer back to your list of must-haves and make note of anything missing.

RV show season is an exciting time, but it’s easy to leave the show more confused than before you arrived. Be sure you remember the above tips to make the most of your RV show experience. Being prepared will help you find the unit that fits your needs the best and make for a better buying experience.
